I was not able to get a subscription to the AMSTAR tool, and so devised my own system with 1 being assigned to studies that met criteria, 5 for partial, and 0 for studies which did not meet the criteria.
Based on the results of this analysis, the most highly rated systematic review provided data supporting the use of 5E lesson planning. This has been a popular lesson planning strategy that my district has supported through professional development. It offers a lot flexibility which I think will help to meet the needs of diverse student groups.
I used this information to create a 5E lesson plan about energy which could be used in a middle school science classroom. There was a lot of detail to include in the lesson plan and research based data to support the instructional design choices. I can't imagine including citations in lesson plans on a regular basis, but it was fun to find out which methods are supported by data.
